KMS host counter remains on 1

Problem: installed KMS host on a Windows 2008 R2 Server, but when you open slmgr.vbs /dlv , the “Current count” remains on “1” , even though you entered a valid KMS key on more then 5 servers, and tried to activate them.
Troubleshooting:
on the servers i tried to activate, i got the error “A problem occured when Windows tried to activate. Error Code 0xC004F038”
Appearantly this means that the KMS server’s activation count has not reached the required 5 (for 2008 servers) or 25 (for windows 7) yet.
Searched around and found this article
So i opened the KMS event log on the KMS server.
And there, it showed that all the servers had the same CMID.
Hmm, someone forgot to do some sysprepping when rolling out these (virtual) servers….

So then; RDP to all these servers; entered slmgr-rearm, reboot, and then enter slmgr-ato.
And then i saw the count rising on the KMS 🙂

By the way: a good start for KMS troubleshooting is this page
